RSS (commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a means of publishing frequently updated works such as blogs, news items, etc. An RSS document, which is called a "feed" or "web feed" benefits publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They also benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from particular websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader".
An example of one can be found on David Huggett's bridge feed. On the linked page you will see an image like this: 
By clicking on that image the interested user cam subscribe to the news feed and be automatically updated via their email applciation or their web browser.
