Content Management allows users of web sites to update areas of the site without having to keep returning to the site designer. This has the obvious advantages of fast site update and lower costs to update. Common uses include a requirement for frequent updating of results for a sports site, or adding news updates to a site.
Incorporating a content management capability into a web site involves close work with the site owner to capture the exact requirements for self-update and is also likely to require a little training, but the benefit to the user can be considerable.
One example I have incorporated is for a bridge web site, where an end user can update the weekly results table and also include links to files to download. The site in question is the Southampton Bridge Club. On the results page for the site several aspects are editable by an end user - the results table, the file download table, and various text headings.
